Probability of staying within a range ~ forex trading oil

0

Clients,

Today I will discuss a topic that is so great. I I wish it was talked about more in the industry but as of yet, it is still a hush hush topic. I cant speculate as to why but here goes.

Based upon past performance of various securities, there can be calculated a probability of a price range move within a specified amount of time. For instance, If the US Tech 100 has moved X points per hour, day, or week over the last X bars, there can be a calculation to figure out the average range as well as a probability of it staying within or moving outside of a range over the next hour, day or week.

Let us take a look at a live example as of today.

Now look at the chart. The expected range is etween 10 and 18 points of movement between 11am and 12pm eastern on the US Tech 100 for today.

There is a 68% chance it will stay in this range and a 32% chance it will move out of this range.

If price moves toward the top of the range and you can sell it for $32 at the top of the range, you will be using a break even strategy. If you can sell it for $50 at the top of the range, you will be using a profitable strategy.

Look at it this way....

Over the course of 1,000 trades, If you are selling for $32, then you will make $21,760 n 680 wins. Likewise, you will lose $21,760 on 320 losses.

Now look at the difference of selling for $50

680 wins = $34,000
320 losses = $16,000
Total P/L = +$18,000

Here is another way to play. If you are comfortable losing a lot and making gigantic winners, you can reverse it.

Lets assume you buy for $10 or sell for $90 to try to capture gains if price moves outside of the range.
Now remember you have to sell or buy back at $50. Let us look at 1,000 trades.

320 wins = $28,800
680 losses = $6,800
Total P/L = $22,000

So it is 10:30am eastern right now. Lets see what price on the US Tech 100 does before 12pm. Let us observe if this time period will be a 68% day or a 32% day.

The Three Commandments of the Successful Forex System Trader ~ forex trading jobs in india

0

Very often people will ask me what is needed to achieve some success in automated trading. I get asked if it is actually possible to live "making money while you sleep" and to exploit market inefficiencies as the market changes. Often people I explain my line of work to are extremely skeptical. For example a person I met a few weeks ago at my sisters wedding asked how this was possible and that if this was possible, why isnt everyone making a profit from the forex market. Oh well, it certainly is useful when you talk to people who have absolutely nothing to do with trading - as a matter of fact - I had not found myself in such a difficult position to explain something for quite a bit of time. In the end, I told her that - in analogy with getting to heaven and the ten commandments - people do not succeed with the use of automated trading systems because they do not follow some very simple principles. I explained to her that there are simple rules that need to be followed when you trade these systems and that deviations - even if only small - can end up making a person fail to achieve the ultimate goal of long term profitability in automated trading.

On todays post I want to talk to you about these "three commandments" I explained to her and why each one of these simple rules is absolutely vital to get success in trading, specifically with mechanical trading systems. Of course, some of you may disagree and some of you may agree but in the end these are the rules I have found to work for me and what I believe "raises the bar" so that only a few traders are able to get to this point. Evidently I have not been enjoying this position for decades and therefore I am still tempted and strive to stay with my "three commandments of the mechanical system trader", hopefully following these three seemingly simple - yet very complex rules - will keep me in my way towards a few decades of forex automated trading profitability :o). Do you want to know more about these rules and whether or not they apply to your current situation ? Keep reading to find out !

1. You shall understand what you are doing. Perhaps this eliminates most of the people out there who are currently wanting to become profitable in the long term using these systems. Understanding is a vital part of success and achieving a profitable position in automated trading will simply not be possible - from what I have seen and experienced - if you do not perfectly understand everything you are doing, the systems you are using and how automated trading works. Understanding needs to be deep and should NOT be merely superficial. Understanding should cover deep knowledge about your systems logic, the inefficiency exploited, etc. If you have not gone through at least a few years worth of trades of the system you are trading in a trade by trade basis doing a trade by trade in-depth analysis then you still need to go a long way before you can consider that you truly know what you are trading. In the end, any effort you wont do is an effort somebody else will make and that someone will take your place as a profitable mechanical trader. So if you want to avoid efforts, this is not the place to be.

2. You shall know what to expect. After knowing what you are doing comes to know what you should expect. Traders who are successful using automated trading systems know exactly what to expect from their systems, they know all the characteristics of the systems they trade and precisely what their predicted draw down and profit periods are like. People who understand their automated trading systems and analyze them extensively know the accuracy of their simulations, the length of profit and draw down periods and all other characteristics of systems. Again - as with understanding - we are not talking about a superficial understanding of what to expect. Anything that happens with your system that you do not take into account within your plan will make you unsuccessful so you have to be prepared for every possible case. What if your system reaches a draw down deeper than the simulations ? what if the system has double the number of predicted consecutive loses ? You should know what the meaning of these events are related to your systems performance.

3. You shall evaluate your systems. The last commandment of the successful mechanical trader is to evaluate. You cannot be successful if you trade a system with blind faith - because every system can fail - and continuously evaluating the performance of your trading system and the current market conditions is of incredible importance to achieve success. Knowing when a worst-case scenario will be reached, if the current draw down cycle is too long, if the system is now too risky to be traded, etc is one of the most important aspects of successful mechanical trading.

For people who read this blog who are also Asirikuy members the three above mentioned commandments may have sounded very familiar as I refer to them continuously within the Asirikuy website videos as the Asirikuy mantra : understand, expect and evaluate. From my experience these three simple things are the only actual skills you need to be a successful system trader. You simply need to understand, know what to expect and evaluate performance.

Of course, easier said than done :o) Maybe the first point seems to be the hardest - and it probably is- but the second and third are NOT any easier. Knowing what to expect from a system requires extensive analysis and it requires you to have a very clear understanding about the role and limitations of simulations and the whole way in which the system changes as market conditions start to develop, not to mention a deep understanding of system cycles, their extent and composition. Evaluating is also not very easy to do since it requires the confidence to run your system on live accounts and to weather the profit and draw down cycles trusting your expectancy analysis to be right.

My advice for you is therefore extremely simple. If you want to be successful in automated trading, follow the above three rules and I can guarantee that you will - at least- get to the point where I am today :o). How To Get Umaki The Trader Builder ~ forex trading free

0

If you have been reading my blog recently you might be aware about the development of a trading tool I have built to use the metatrader 4 strategy tester as a "live" trading platform that would let us speed up the process of manual or discretionary system evaluation to a great extent. The tool allows us to use the visual backtesting feature of the strategy tester to trade on "live evolving charts" as we would trade the real market. You can read more about this tool and what it does here. On todays post I want to talk about the meaning of the word Umaki and how you can get this useful tool to increase the speed in which you learn to trade manually and understand the forex trading market.

What does Umaki mean ? Contrary to my general expert advisors which use words in Quechua or Nahuatl as their names (all experts of the Watukushay project use them) this trade-learning tool uses a word in Zulu, the language of a very well known group of Southern African tribes, to describe the EA. Umaki means "builder" in Zulu, I named it this way because I consider Umaki to be a "trader builder" a tool which can be used to get to successful manual trading much quicker - yet with a LOT of additional effort - in currency trading.

Why Zulu ? You might be asking. The reason for this is because of the way in which Umaki will be shared with all of you. Since Umaki does NOT have anything to do with automated trading but just with manual and discretionary trading I decided not to make it available within Asirikuy but to use it as a way to do something better.

This is when I remembered the "Treasures of Africa" foundation one of my favorite charities dedicated to the protection and shelter of children in Tanzania. This foundation is run by a group of very dedicated and selfless Christians who attempt to do the impossible day after day to bring some hope into the heart of Africa. I have to say that the job they do is absolutely amazing and I have always greatly enjoyed to help them in as much as I can with what they need. I have to say that I also think the name of this charity is absolutely incredible, I can assure you that after you see their pictures youll understand that diamonds are not the true treasures of Africa.

When I programmed Umaki it seemed like the perfect opportunity to help them and to do something to make the world better, even if it is only a grain of sand. If you want to get the Umaki EA to further develop your manual trading abilities please donate some amount of money (any amount you want) to the "Treasures of Africa" foundation. It would be absolutely great if you not only donated some money but also committed to the sponsoring of one of their children. Sponsoring a child is an absolutely wonderful endeavor and I can assure you that it is a true way in which you can make a difference to change some of the bad things happening around the world.

If you have made your donation or have started sponsoring a child please send me an email to ekans_(at)hotmail.com with a copy of your payment receipt and Ill be glad to send you the link to download the Umaki mql4 code along with a small set of instructions on how to use the EA. The download link and instructions will be sent to you within 24 hours after I receive your email. I believe that for people who want to become serious discretionary traders Umaki will be a very good tool and for everyone who sponsors a child rewards will go far beyond those of trading. Also remember that the donations you make to this charity are entirely tax deductible (at least under US law).

About adding a little bit of risk to bull spreads ~ forex trading optionshouse

0

Ok Clients, Remember...

This is a different way to trade so if you are not comfortable doing what I am getting ready to layout, you dont have to nor should you. Its all based on how you want to manage your account.

I see a lot of new traders averaging down to try to "BE RIGHT" on their trade. This method blew out 9 of my accounts in the past and I highly suggest NOT doing it with one exception. Bull Spreads. A trader can do this effectively on bull spreads because you know your max risk.

This is about the safest way to "Average Down" because you know what your max loss is. Still remember that averaging down is not for the low funded account. Try it on demo if you are inclined
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything I am going to talk about is based on the "Wally World 6 Million" trade below

Daily 415pm Expiration 16000-16400             16030  16036
Daily 415pm Expiration  15400-16200            16002  16007
Daily 415pm Expiration 15600-16000             15980  15985
Daily 415pm Expiration 15600-16400             15995  16000
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I am going to buy 16000-16400 and sell the 15600-16000 then I want to get the closest price possible to the floor, right? well right now the price shows 16036 which is 30something points higher than the actual underlying price.

If you want to trade 7 contracts but you want to minimize your risk. You can place buy orders:

Buy 1 @ 16036 This will put you in the trade.
Buy 1 @ 16026
Buy 2 @16016
Buy 3 @ 16006

Your average price will be 16016.

Your max risk will be $112 for 7 contracts. You can know that you wil not lose any more than $112 if your trade fails.

Each point will be worth $7 so if price moves 50 points in your favor, then your profit will be sitting at a $280 profit. If price does what it did Thursday and over 300 points in your favor, you will be sitting on a profit of $2,100

If price falls 300 points against you, your max loss is $112.

Strategy Diversification Higher Profits Higher Risks ~ forex trading kindergarten

0

If you look into the Asirikuy website, one of the main objectives around my development of automated trading systems is to develop experts we can use to makeup a successful porftolio of long term profitable trading systems. Most traders - new and experienced - believe intuitively that adding several strategies to a portfolio will diminish risk in the sense that the possibility to attain significant draw down levels will be reduced. However, through my experience and analysis of portfolio diversification I have found that - although portfolio trading is great - great care must be taken in both the makeup of the systems and the evaluation of the actual risk levels used to avoid catastrophic loses due to a "massive" portfolio failure. During this post I want to talk a little bit about the things you must take into account when designing a portfolio and how risk must be carefully studied to come up with a reasonable "worst case" scenario.

Why is portfolio trading great ? Well, we all know that having all our eggs in one basket is not so good. When we use a single trading strategy we are exposed to several problems which can be avoided when many different strategies are used. For example, we are not subject to the "hard hand" of the market as when one of our strategies is unable to profit from its set market inefficiencies another one will most likely be able to. So in the end what we get is a diminishment in our market exposure without a reduction in our profitability since - in the end- we will reach the same profit levels on all systems as if we had if we had run them by themselves. There is also a very positive psychological effect of running portfolios in the sense that "someone" will be winning and you will have something good to look at almost all the time. A shield you wont have if you have to endure the draw downs attained by a single trading system.
-
-
However, new traders generally take portfolio design too lightly. It is simply not a matter of putting all the systems you can within an account, put a very high risk level and hope for the best. No, it is not about that and that strategy usually leads to account wipeouts and other such problems. You need to make up your portfolio with a very clear plan and knowledge of what you will do when certain scenarios present themselves.

First of all, each separate system must have its OWN risk projections and its own worst case scenario (the point where the system has simply become to risky to continue trading). You need to know into how much draw down each system will go because each draw down will contribute to the overall loses of the account. Second - and most important - you need to calculate your portfolio risk accurately. To do this you need to calculate the sum of all the projected draw downs and have this as your worst-case portfolio scenario.

In the end each system will be able to reach twice its historically worst perfoming point (the worst case individual scenario) and the portfolios worst scenario will be the addition of all the systems historical maximum risk levels. In the end, systems have a flexibility to reach higher than expected draw downs (which are likely going to happen in the future) and the portfolio will be able to reach larger than expected risk additions since its "worst point" is an addition of draw down. This in turn means that portfolios have a lower risk thresehold than the systems, mainly because they need to reduce risk through diversification -if this doesnt happen - the portfolio is simply not working.

In the end doing this analysis will ensure that you have CLEAR targets for your risk and clear "stops" in your accounts loses (since you know when to stop individual systems or the whole portfolio). One of the most important things in trading is to have a plan and trading a portfolio with a previous risk analysis is VITAL for survival. Of course, making sure that each one of the systems used is long term profitable is also of extreme importance and something which will make the success of a trading portfolio much more likely. (for those of you who are Asirikuy members a video will be out this Sunday better explaining a lot about portfolio makeup and analysis).

Trading a Martingale Based on Backtests A VERY Dangerous Road ~ forex trading help

0

During the past few months I have sadly seen a great increase in the number of Martingale systems flowing around on the internet and their use by new and inexperienced traders. I have also seen some people testing and using Martingale systems with great hope and some with what seem to be some very good results. Many of these people who use Martingales or systems with progressive money management seem to rely on backtesting results to test their theories and sometimes they claim that a 10 year backtest in which no wipeouts happen is "good enough" to consider a Martingale worth running on a live account since it is inherently "safe". Within the next few paragraphs you will see why this way of approaching Martingale trading is terribly dangerous and why people approaching trading in this manner are bound - sooner or later - to wipe out accounts and face the truth about progressive money management, in the end it never works.

The argument here seems to be pretty simple. You know that Martingale systems are dangerous but if you can get a 10 year backtests that shows no wipeouts it means that you are safe, right ? If during such a long trading period and such a varied array of market conditions your system survives then everything should be Okay. The truth is that there a few VERY large pitfalls to this approach.

The first problem with the backtesting of Martingale systems is that there is an inherent error in every backtesting result which can be explained in technical aspects of both the backtesting mechanism and the market itself. A 10 year backtest only gives you an approximation of the results during the past 10 years because - in reality - things like spread widening, requotes, broker differences and the absence of one minute interpolation would have made the results different to some extent.

In the case of Martingale and progressive money management systems the problem is that a very small error in the backtests can make the whole difference between wipeout and survival. Imagine that you have a Martingale system that wipes an account with 7 consecutive loses and the account achieves a maximum of 5 in a 10 year backtest. Now if the system only had 2 additional consecutive loses on any of those losing periods the account would have been wiped. While an addition of 2 consecutive loses to a given trading period for a trading system designed on sound principles is minimal, the effect on a Martingale or progressive money management system is bound to be devastating.

In the end the limitations of simulations make the "certainty of safeness" of any Martingale system a lie since the actual errors and limitations of the simulations are not only important but actually most likely determinant towards the evaluation of systems that are so sensitive to small increases in the number of consecutive loses. In reality, all trading systems are bound to be facing anything between one to three times the number of consecutive loses they have given in historical testing and this makes progressive money management systems always reach wipeouts in real trading.

To sum it up, using Martingales based on backtesting is a VERY dangerous thing to do due to the limitations of the simulations. In the end, ALL martingales are bound to wipe their accounts in the long term. This is a statistical certainty which does not change, no matter what short term results show or what simulations may appear to be telling you. It comes back to the old saying, there are bold and old traders but there are no old bold traders.

The Ability To Make Money The True Reward of Forex Trading ~ forex trading login

0

One of the biggest reasons why most forex traders fail to be profitable in the long term or the reason why most are unable to achieve their financial goals through trading is usually lack of capitalization. I have spoken several times about this issue and the fact that most - if not all new traders - seek to achieve financial independence with a usually very small account in the order of 5-10K or even less. The truth is certainly that this is not possible in a sustained manner over a long period of time.

Even if your needs were as low as 1K, producing 10% in average every month is most likely impossible as the self-limiting character of inefficiencies in the market would prevent this achievement for a very long time. As a matter of fact, there are no examples - to the best of my knowledge - of people who have achieved this degree of proficiency for at least 5 years with most people who speak about this profit levels being "sustainable" achieving them in small periods of time. It therefore remains true that such targets are unachievable under statistically significant periods of time (5-10 years) (if you have real evidence of an example of someone who has achieved this please do let me know !).
-
-
Why do the best fund managers and traders in the world earn so much money if their returns - to the beginning forex trader at least - seem so humble ? The truth is actually that making money in the market (and keeping it !) is extremely difficult and achieving proficiency that allows survival under many different market conditions is very difficult. The ability to stand through deep and extended draw down periods and the ability to have confidence in ones strategy is a vital part of achieving this hard endeavor.

This is why when you are able to achieve profitability during a statistically relevant period you can say that you have acquired one of the rarest abilities in todays modern financial world : The ability to make money. You have indeed succeeded in the use of trading strategies to exploit market inefficiencies in a sustainable fashion, something which is terribly difficult to do and absolutely valuable. Even if you did so only with a 1000 USD account, the fact that you now master this skill makes your income potential effectively limitless.

After taking this step at mastering the ability to make money it is now time to make forex trading a real business for you. If you really want to make money trading, then you cannot limit yourself to the trading of your own capital, you need to start managing other peoples funds in order to increase your income potential to levels which fit your life style. With a five year verified track record there will be many people fighting for you to manage their funds and I can assure you that you will not have problems finding people willing to get the diversification and "higher than stocks" average yearly return you will be offering.

In the end you need to focus on developing your ability to make money and you need to think about trading as a business to sell this ability. Do not limit yourself to your own capital. If you truly have the skills to make money then there should be no fear in sharing this ability with others. You will explain them all the risk and your track record would also show the ups and downs of a 5 year trading period. In the end your ability will shine on its own and even if you can "only" make a 15% average yearly return, you will have literally millions of dollars lined up for your management.

Tomorrow I will write a post about the technical and regulatory aspects concerning money management in forex so that those of you interested in this path will have a better idea of how to follow it. If you would like to know more about my journey in automated trading and how you too can code systems geared at achieving long term profitability please consider buying my ebook on automated trading or joining Asirikuy to receive all ebook purchase benefits, weekly updates, check the live accounts I am running with several expert advisors and get in the road towards long term success in the forex market using automated trading systems. Whats it like to spend a day with Richard Jaycobs President of Cantor Exchange ~ forex trading new york

0

Yesterday, I had a great day! My local traders meetup group was having a little meeting at my house and we had a fantastic guest speaker. Richard Jaycobs, president of Cantor Exchange and one of the veterans of the markets spent all day with me and stayed over to talk with traders from all over the Knoxville Tennessee area. Here is how it all went down...

First of all, Richard has an extensive history with the markets. He worked along side Paul Tudor Jones, one of the wall street legends. He founded the first internet based futures exchanges. He worked for the New York Cotton exchange and was a managing director at Finex, among other things. He is currently the president of Cantor Exchange, a wholly owned subsidiary of the financial services firm, Cantor Fitgerald.

Here is a picture of Richard, myself, and my son in his underwear.
Rich Jaycobs

One of the things I was most impressed with was the generosity of Cantor Exchange. They are out to work with all kinds of trading related businesses. When a trading exchange sends the president to your house to ask YOU how they can serve you, then this is an amazing thing.  So why did he come to my house?

I had recently met Richard and Rod Drown (managing director at Cantor Exchange) at a traders conference. I approached Rod and the very first words that came out of my mouth were, " If you can do what you say you can do, then I can bring 1,000 traders your way." Now at the time, I had no clue how fast the Cantor Exchange brand would spread through word of mouth alone but I was bound and determined to find out more.

So I started messing with trades on the exchange and researching and found out that these guys are sitting on a goldmine of awesomeness for the retail trader. Some of the ways you can trade on the exchange just blew me away! I was hooked, as are many other traders so I sat down and wrote out a 40+ page document on my thoughts about the exchange and how I saw it from an outsider. Yep, forty flipping pages! Click and away it went to the execs at CX. (By the way CX stands for Cantor Exchange).

So long story short, I had a series of talks with Rod and he asked me if it was ok if Richard Jaycobs flew down to see me for the day. I politely said, " Of course it is ok. I would be happy to talk with him." Inside, I was like a kid in a candy store because I actually caught the attention of someone that wanted to hear my ideas.

So the day came. (Actually that day was yesterday July 13, 2015). Richard arrived promptly on time and we sat at my kitchen table and talked back and forth for 5 straight hours. We went through my ideas list one by one. If I thought something at the exchange was bunk, I let him know. If he thought one of my ideas was garbage, he let me know. We disagreed on a few things and agreed on a whole lot of things.

When we were tired from sitting, we would walk into my trading office and look at charts. I had told him about designing an indicator for trading on the exchange and he wanted to see it. We took a couple of short breaks and then went right back at it. Idea after idea. Line by line. Taking notes and crossing things off. I even got to interview Richard for a Youtube special coming up soon.

One of the most amazing things is the fact that Cantor Exchange wants to work with traders. They are not stuck up and have their nose in the clouds like several other exchanges. I remember calling and emailing a competitor exchange about an idea I had that would have been great and never once received a reply of any sort. Point Blank, Cantor Exchange is willing to talk with the little man.

So anyway, getting back to my story... after hours and hours of talking, the doorbell rang. Lo and behold, it was a member of one of my facebook groups. This guy, Steve Cole AKA Ole Dude as decribed by his high school students, is just about as country as they come. His accent is about as thick as molassas on a winter night. Now Steve was interested in the exchange and Richard talked right along with him and took his ideas as well... By the way, I just found out that Steve is now a Cantor Exchange trader, as of today. I assume he liked what he heard last night.

The doorbell rang again and here they came one after another, trader after trader filled my house with smiles and laughs. Not one of them had on a suit and tie... This is Tennessee by the way.

Then the vittles were on the table and everybody had plate. Boy, was it good. The smell of the food filled the house until after I lit the burners to keep the food warm and the house started to smell like a gas factory for a few minutes. We had pork BBQ, Rotisserie chicken, Mashed taters, Brown beans, Corn salad, Green bean casarole, Cheesecake bites, fudge, Cornbread muffins, and rolls. This was a feast for an old southern boy such as myself.

As all the traders were eating and sitting wherever they could find a spot, the speaking part came and I stood up and tried to talk but everyone was so engaged in their conversations that no one even heard what I was saying Haha! So I gave them a few more minutes to chow down and then I, along with Richard attempted to explain the basics of the exchange and answer questions, mostly coming from Troy.

Now Troy is a friend of mine that works for Ninjacators so obviously he overtook the entire line of questioning almost and started firing off. One right after another the questions came. I answered a few but Richard answered most of them. Now Troy was creating some pretty powerful questions that would have made me feel a bit humbled but Richard just fired back the answer as easy as you could think and answered each and every question that was asked.

Look at the picture above. Richard is showing everyone how to play an air guitar. Just kidding, he is actually answering questions.

All in all, here is the deal. The Cantor Exchange has plans so great that I am so excited to be a part of it all. They want to create a trading experience that is the absolute best possible. They want to allow everyone access to the exchange in ways that are so simple that anyone would understand. They want to create products that traders want. Best of all, they want to hear ideas from you. If you have an idea that would make the exchange a better place to trade, let them know.

For more information about Cantor Exchange, or if you would like to get updates and talk with others about the exchange, please visit facebook.com/groups/cantorexchange or if you would like to sign up for a trading account, visit forestparkbx.com . Forest Park BX is a referring partner to the exchange, can get you set up with an account and answer questions along the way.

So whats all the fuss about? What makes Cantor Exchange so awesome?? You just stay tuned, join the facebook group and watch this thing unfold. You will be blown away soon! Below is a small sample of things to come...

1. Write your own binary options contracts at ANY strike you want
2. No minimum deposit
3.  All contracts are only $1 allowing smaller traders to participate in the market

Now many of the most awesome things, I can not mention at this time but you just wait!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am constantly trying to improve my strategies. Many times, I will get an email about why we took a certain trade or why we lost the trade. The answer is no one knows. If you have a strategy and trade it, you must take the ups with the downs. If it has been back tested enough and put through rigorous trial, you should have a strategy that you can rely on.

I posted a book on our group site today. It is called  "Trend Following" by Michael Covel. A trader really needs to read that because it has all the statistics anyone would need to learn to ride out the losses.

Mark my words, there will be a few weeks in the next year which produce hundreds of points of profit. You just need to keep striving. Keep learning. Always keep getting better and better.

Some clients asked me this week, "Why did you change your strategy?" I didnt. I have a toolbox of strategies I use because the market is always changing, always evolving.

I did a webinar this week that showed how a trader could make a living by one strategy alone. If you want to stick to it day in and day out, you must first back test it. I showed a month or so of back testing in the webinar but in order to put your own money on the line, make damn sure you know it inside and out. If you want to test it, here it is...

At 8am every day, if the Wall Street 30 price is above the hourly 30 period exponential moving average, then buy the 8am-415pm upper bull spread at $30 risk or less. Set your Take Profit at +20. Vice A Versa goes for a sell. Thats it.

Now this strategy wins way more than it loses and it works great during trends. During consolidations, it doesnt work so well.

Back test it. Back test it for the past 10 years, day by day and you will gain confidence. Always trade on a demo account until you have that confidence.

Well until next week! I am excited for September!

My Currency Trader Magazine June Article Check it Out ! ~ forex trading jobs in london

0

As many of you may already know - if you have been following my blog for a while - I have become a somewhat "regular" contributor to Currency Trader Magazine, one of the most well-known and respected magazines published in the area of forex trading. Besides featuring very famous and well-respected authors such as Barbara Rockefeller, the magazine tries to give people quality articles about both fundamental and technical aspects of currency trading. I have to say that Currency Trader Magazine had become a monthly "must-read" for me before I started writing in it, with its articles being very good to catch both a birds eye view and a practical perspective over current market conditions but being an author now gives me the opportunity to humbly contribute to this great monthly magazine. On todays post I want to talk to you a little bit about my June article and how I think it provides very valuable information about market inefficiencies and the way in which they evolve over time. You can download the June edition of the Magazine -containing my article- for free here(if it is already August and youre reading this then you will have to purchase the issue separately).

The article I wrote for the June issue attempts to address a significant question I had been asking myself for a while. Is the market so inefficient that the movements within trading sessions are predictable ? I wanted to take a look at the Asian session in particular and answer this interesting question regarding whether or not we could look at this session for a period of 4 years and predict the future magnitude of absolute movement and the range within this trading session. Would it be possible that the market moves in a predictable way during this period of low volatility ? I started to do some research to find out.

In the article I go through an analysis of the Assian sessions range and absolute movement within the past 4 years on the EUR/USD, EUR/GBP and EUR/CHF attempting to find a "pattern" of evolution that could signal the existence or absence of a "predictable movement" within this session. Of course, part of this research was inspired in the fact that many commercial system sellers have attempted to exploit inefficiencies around this session that have worked for a while and have then become obsolete. I have always thought that there is some predictability around the Asian session but attempting to exploit it without any adaptability is simply a behavior prone to eventually fail (you really wonder how many of those sellers are really traders).

The results I found were - for me - absolutely breath taking. The analysis of absolute movement values for the three different pairs revealed nothing spectacular, showing that the ranges evolve widely as the market changed. Effectively this proves why Asian session scalpers are doomed to fail, the character of the session changes tremendously with time and exploiting it using such systems in the long term is not going to work. However I then took a different look at the picture and evaluated the range and absolute movements differently - taking certain additional market elements into account- obtaining a wonderful result. As a matter of fact, what I found confirms what I have suspected for a long time.

Not only are the Asian session conditions predictable, but they are almost the SAME for the EUR/USD, EUR/GBP and EUR/CHF. This means that my article found a key part of fundamental market behavior, a characteristic of the market that appears to remain unchanged as time goes by. Of course, the details of this analysis cannot be revealed here (you need to go ahead and read the article ! :o) ) but you will see that my analysis shows clearly that the Asian session is technically inefficient and that creating systems to exploit this inefficiency is indeed possible. During the next few months I will be working on the creation of several different mechanical trading systems to use this research to show that effectively the behavior within the Asian session lends itself to mechanical exploitation.

I hope you have read and enjoyed this post and my June article. Please leave any comments, questions or suggestions you may have :o). Win Loss Statistics of our Spread Indicator ~ forex trading network marketing

0

Hit 10 pips profit 75% of the time within 2 hours... often leading to hundreds of pips...

We have an indicator in development for the use of bull spreads in Nadex, for forex trades, and also for binary options Nadex trades. Below are the testing and results. First, I will post pictures of the indicator in action in the live market. The arrows did not repaint in any form. What you see is how they came in the live market.

A member of our group supplied all the information here. I am just recompiling it for you in an easy to read format. This is not my work but rather the awesome and inspiring work of our member, Nick. One of the great things about Joaquin Trading is the fact that we all work together for the good of the group as a whole! We all share ideas with each other and it is fantastic.

So below are a few charts of the indicator in action. The red arrows signify buying opportunities and the red arrows signify selling opportunities. We will try to capture 20 pips of profit on half of the position and then move our stop loss to break even to let the other half ride for larger moves.

To see a larger picture of a chart, just click it. To see the actual excel profit/loss statistics, scroll to the bottom and to see it in google sheets, just click on the link at the bottom.

If this is something you are interested in using for your own trading, just CLICK HERE!

All of these signals were using a setting on the indicator that looks at the trends in the market from 5 minute, 15 minute, 30 minute, and 1 hour time frames.

========================================================================

What I will post below are the actual emails from Nick and I will also include a spreadsheet he made available with statistics detailed from each day of testing. Here come the emails...

========================================================================

Hi Ryan,

I wanted to let you know how I am testing your Bull Spread Indicator, and I want to get your opinion to determine if my strategy is any good or not.

I know you haven’t really come up with any rules for this indicator, so I came up with some rules of my own for testing.

I am testing making money 3 different ways:

1) to get 10 pips profit
2) to get 20 pips profit
3) to make an ATM Binary Options trade

The rules I am using are:

1) Take 2 bull spread contracts when the trend arrow appears
2) Take a BO ATM contract at the same time (1 hour options >> if the signal comes out between 9:00 and 9:45, take 10:00 Expire/after 9:45 take 11:00 exp)
3) Close out one of the bull spread contracts when it makes 10 pips
4) Close out the second bull spread contract when it reaches 20 pips
5) Close out either bull spread contract when it either reaches -20 pips or hits the 2 hour mark

One thing I am also doing different than you, is that I might take an additional set of trades if I get a new set of arrows in the same direction (if I have already closed out a previous set of trades).  For example, I get a trend arrow at 10:00 AM and it makes me 10 pips at 10:10 and 20 pips at 10:25.  At 10:40, I get a new trend arrow in the same direction, so I start the process all over again. (This is outside of what you would do, so it’s probably more risky.)

SO I back tested this strategy for the week of April 20-24.  It did excellent on the historical test.

These are the results of that test:

10 pip trades - 117 wins/7 losses 94%  (1120.00 profit)
20 pip trades - 91 wins/33 losses 73%  (1712.00 profit)
BO trades - 104 wins/20 losses 84%  (4200.00 profit)

Total winning $ (not taking into account spreads and commissions) = 7032.00

This week I started my charts running on Sunday have not refreshed or reloaded my charts at all.  Here are my results after 4 days this week:

10 pip trades - 113 wins/34 losses 77%  (694.00 profit)
20 pip trades - 89 wins/59 losses 60%  (1164.00 profit)
BO trades - 85 wins/64 losses 57%  (1050.00 profit)

Total winning $ (not taking into account spreads and commissions) = 2908.00

Obviously, taking spreads and commissions into account, the total winning $ would probably drop by 10-20%.

The first week of testing was almost “too good to be true”. I feel that the results from this week are more realistic.

Also, please be aware that the “losses” are not all unprofitable.  If a bull spread hit the 2 hour mark and did not make 10 pips (but made 7), I would classify that trade as a loss, even though it actually made a little money.

As you always ask, is this a winning system?  From what I have looked at so far, the answer is YES.

One thing I have noticed, is that the indicator spits out almost all of the trades between 12AM and 12PM.  The arrows that pop up between 12PM and 12AM usually dont work as well (though I did not exclude them from my test).  The arrows also work the best when there is movement in the market.  The market didn’t move much on Monday May 4, so the profits were very small that day.

In my testing (9 days) there wasn’t a losing day.  And this week, each of the 3 types of trades did not have a losing day.  So if you only took 10 pip win trades, you would have been profitable every day (and the same was true for the other 2 types of trades).

So this is why I am excited about this new indicator.  I have been interested in bull spreads for a long time, because I just hate risking 80.00 to win 20.00 on Binary Options.  If the market spikes on you just once in 5 trades, you end up trading all day for nothing.  I have done OK with the trend arrows and V5, but I want to trade with less risk involved.

Thanks,

Nick ******

=========================================================================

Hi Ryan,

I did my study on all 8 currency pairs that have Nadex Bull Spreads, using the 1M charts.  I did not actually make any trades (demo or real), but tracked all of the results on paper.

I will send you the screenshots here shortly. (which are posted above)

Thanks for taking the time to read my e-mail. Hopefully I was able to help you understand how I was testing.  The rules I kind of “made up” from rules that you had used in other strategies.

It all looks good on paper….but will it work in actual trading?  That’s what I intend on finding out next week.

Thanks again, and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

Nick

What Doesnt Change Talking About Inherent Characteristics of the Market ~ forex trading is easy

0

Perhaps one of the most important questions you can ask yourself when you start using automated trading systems is : how will I survive in the long term ? This is one of the most common inquiries made by traders new to the field since it seems to be evident that the market is an ever-changing beast that does not allow the mechanical exploitation of any inefficiency for too long. New traders often experience this when they first begin to use automated trading systems. Their systems do very well, then fail or they never do well at all. Besides the fact that many of these systems dont have adequate evaluation- leading with inadequate and unrealistic expectations to long term loses - traders almost never ask themselves : what doesnt change ? It is obvious that if you want to exploit a given characteristic of the market for long term profitability you have to look for characteristics of the market that remain constant as a function of time. But are there any ? On todays post I want to share with you my view about market changes and why - even though the market changes- some characteristics of the market remain constant.

When you start to trade the market seems like an invincible beast that behaves in a very unpredictable manner. I remember that the first few months I traded I used to think "I got it" only to discover that the market would rip my strategy apart the next few months. I used to behave erratically - like most new traders behave- modifying my strategy every week in a desperate attempt to "adapt" to changes in market conditions. Of course, my focus at that moment wasnt the understanding of market inefficiencies but the massive multiplication of my money from 500 USD to a few million in a few years.

It wasnt until much later that I decided to stop my journey and build an understanding. If I ever was going to make money from this seemingly chaotic thing, I would need to find the "science" behind it. It became important for me to understand how the market behaved, what changed, what didnt and what strategies could be built that would most likely work for the next 20-40 years. I needed strategies that could work for long enough to build myself a decent income and NOT strategies that would put my capital into excessive risk or work for a year and then wipe my account.
--
The question becomes : what doesnt change ? After reading a lot of books and watching market behavior for many months, I started to realize that the only thing that doesnt change in the market, is the specie trading it. The market is traded by humans and therefore any aspect of the market imprinted with human behavior should remain fairly constant. As many traders have discovered I started to see that - although individual human behavior is very different - crowd behavior doesnt change very much. I then read a few papers on game theory experiments applied to economics on groups of people across very different cultures and the results started to match up as the groups became bigger. I then realized that - what doesnt change - is simply the way in which crowds react to price action.

How do crowds react to price action ? You see manifestations of this everyday - not only in the form of market trends - but in the form of long term reversal and continuation patterns, support and resistance levels, etc. There are some characteristics of the market that simply do not change, characteristics which have appeared time and time again during the past 30 or 40 years. Evidence of this is present on almost all market instruments from the GBP/USD, to gold, to the DOW index. However you will notice when you do a close analysis that - even though these objects are ever-present within market instruments - their AMPLITUDE and LENGTH changes as time evolves. A trend that may have been only 200 pips long in 2004 can be 1000 pips in 2010 and the reason why this happens is related with the markets trading volume.
-
-
As time evolves and there are more people in the world, the amount of money being moved in the markets becomes larger and therefore the extent of inherent characteristics of the market caused by crowd behavior also become larger. Through different market conditions, there may be larger or smaller movements of money, causing overall changes in the extent of market moves that appear like "large changes in market behavior" but that are no more than the same old characteristics viewed under the looking glass of a different volatility. For this reason, the key - I believe- to the exploitation of long term market inefficiencies seems to be the use of an inherent market characteristics that changes only with market volatility. Trends are a perfect example of this fact and there are many examples of successful trend following systems that achieve their long term profitability through adaptive criteria based on market volatility.

How to calculate Take Profit Levels on Nadex Bull Spreads ~ forex trading or stock trading

0

It is really simple. I will not over complicate it. There are several hour long webinars out there on the web that shows how to do this but I will tell you in a few short sentences. Nadex profit and loss is equal to $1 per tick. What is a tick? It is the LAST digit on any bull spread. If the Gold price is 1299.6, then that last digit (6) is what you want to look at. If the Wall Street 30 price is 16430, then the last digit (0) is the digit you want to watch. When calculating your TP, all you have to do is erase the point, if there is a point in the quote such as the one in the Gold price at 1299.6 If I want to calculate at what price a $30 profit means, lets pretend I am selling, then this is how you do it... 12996 (take out the point) MINUS 30 = 12966. Then add the point back in. 1296.6 1296.6 is the price you want to take profit at to make a potential $30 profit. Lets look at the Wall St 30 at a price of 16430. If you sold it at 16430 and wanted a $45 profit, where would you set your TP at? 16430 MINUS 45 EQUALS 16385. 16430-45= 16385 So 16385 is where you want to buy it back. So what about buying? how do I calculate buying? Answer... Just ADD instead of SUBTRACT If I want a profit of $30... 16430 PLUS 30 EQUALS 16460. 16460 is where you set your TP And on the Gold trade, if I want a $30 profit when buying... Remember to take out the decimal. 1299.6 will become 12996 12996 PLUS 30 EQUALS 13026. Add the decimal back in... 1302.6 is your TP price. Thats it.

It is NOT Only About the Spread Understanding Market Depth ~ forex trading jargon

0

Maybe the first thing that people new to forex learn about brokers is the fact that better brokers have better spreads. Since the spread - the difference between the bid and ask price - is the fixed cost per transaction then any given broker that offers you a better cost per transaction will ultimately be better from a profit wise perspective. This becomes critical when you are using systems that take profit in areas lower than 10 times the spread since the contribution of the market spread to your trading costs is very significant. However what traders often fail to notice is the fact that the spread is not enough to tell a brokers quality from another, often new traders will get involved with brokers who have "the best" spreads only to find that their execution is no where near what they expected. How can you judge the quality of different brokers besides the spread ? On todays post I want to talk about marketp depth, the nature of order execution and what you should look for within a broker besides an excellent spread level. This article will also further pinpoint the difficulties in achieving long term profitabilities with scalping systems and why great care is needed when choosing a broker for such systems.

What ? I thought that the spread was the only cost per transaction, determining broker quality - you might be thinking. However reducing broker performance to their spread level is simplistic and does not give you a full picture about the whole quality of your brokers trading operation. When you buy a given contract in forex trading, you are - ideally - filling a transaction from someone who wants to sell their previously held contract. For example, if you want to buy EUR/USD at 1.2345 you are actually buying a contract from someone who is selling it at 1.2345+spread. The dealer hands the contract over to you and keeps the Bid/Ask difference -the spread- as a comission.

However the problem comes when you realize that the number of contracts available at any given price level is not unlimited. Of course, not everyone wants to sell EUR/USD at a given price level or buy it at another and therefore the amount of liquidity available in the market is very limited. The consequence is that you might have a broker with a GREAT spread but it might have a very dry liquidity pool so you might be unable to get your orders filled at the price levels you want.
-
-
Of course, the problem now comes to the difference between brokers with and without dealing desks. When a broker has a dealing desk it will try to fill all your orders, regardless of liquidity but it might not want to fill your orders at a certain price level if your orders are too large or too fast for them. The solution of the broker to this exposure you cause it is to simply requote you until you get a price level in which the broker has enough liquidity, hedging positions from other traders, etc. The end result is that you feel absolutely tricked because you are unaware of the true causes of why all this requoting has happened.

On the other hand, ECN brokers allow you to have second level market depth, which means that you are able to directly see the orders that are being placed and you can actually SEE how much volume is available for you to get. Of course, there are simply no requotes on ECN brokers because the transactions are done from peer to peer and everything is much more transparent to you (of course, someone can beat you to a transaction but then there is no requote but simply you "failed" to capture the transaction first) . Using an ECN broker allows you to see exactly how the market is moving and what volumes at what price levels are available for purchase.

For systems that need to trade fast having this added volume information and having transparency over execution is absolutely vital to have any chance of long term success. The fact that liquidity at different price levels is limited also points out why scalping systems may not have such a great chance at achieving long term profitability. Many people are fighting for very narrow price ranges with very limited volumes and the people who fail to get their desired price levels will definitely lose a significant portion of their profits. However, systems that swing trade and use very wide targets might no be affected by this fact simply because they can have a lot of flexibility around their entry points and deviations of +/- 5 pips are not bound to cause any disastrous effects in the long term.

So to sum it up, the quality of a broker is not only given by its spread levels but by the quality of its liquidity pool. When you use a regular dealing desk broker you will not be aware of this pool while on ECN brokers you will see all the action directly through second level market depth. Having brokers that allow you to see deeper is vital for people who trade scalping systems while it adds little value for traders who use swing and longer term systems. Nonetheless traders who use long term strategies but trade high amounts of volume may also need to see their brokers liquidity pool to catch better entry and exit points.

Alternative Adaptive Criteria Introducing a New Feature of Teyacanani ~ forex trading jobs in uae

0

One of the main problems Teyacanani has faced from the moment of its release is the use of a daily ATR indicator with small period values (3 to 6) which are extremely sensitive to the presence or absence of Sunday candles within the brokers feed. The fact that these periods are small makes the presence of these candles extremely influential, something that doesnt happen with the turtle system or Watukushay No.2 which use much longer ATR period lengths (14-20). In order to solve this problem we have implemented an EA that generates an offline chart without Sunday candles but this system does not work on some brokers for reasons pertinent to each brokers particular software implementation. On todays post I want to introduce a new solution to this Teyacanani problem showing you a new type of adaptation that uses the ATR indicator but does not rely on daily indicator data, effectively eliminating the problem of Sunday candles for this EA on brokers where our non-Sunday solution does not work.

What is exactly the problem with Sunday candles ? When you calculate the value of a daily ATR indicator, the code calculates the value of the ATR assigning the same weight to the values of all daily candles. On brokers where Sunday candles exist these candles are treated - within the calculation of the ATR - as if they were regular daily candles when they usually have only 10-20% of the regular volume of a complete weekday. When you calculate the value of the daily ATR for a small number of periods you will often get a very significantly smaller value for the indicator when compared with an indicator where no Sunday candles are involved.

Many people - me included - will think here that the best and easiest solution would be simply to decrease the values of the filters on the EA to compensate for a "lower overall" ATR value. However the main issue here is that no accurate 10 year backtesting data with Sunday candles is available to test the strategy and this therefore makes any modification done impossible to evaluate with metatrader 4. Possibly diminishing the value of all filters might work, but there is also a very important possibility that this will simply not work as - when low ATR periods are used - you might get days where the ATR is calculated without the Sunday candle. For example, a 4 period daily ATR on Friday only counts Friday, Thursday, Wednesday and Tuesday, leaving outside Monday and Sunday. Introducing a modification that decreases all overall ATR related variables will probably have an adverse effect on these days.

What is the solution then ? The easiest thing to do here was to find a way of removing the Sunday candles from the chart, merging Monday and Sunday candles to get a "clean feed" that simulates that of a broker without Sunday candles. Using an EA called "without Sunday", available from the mql4 code database, we were able to eliminate the problem for most brokers. However, due to limiations inherent to some other brokers - particularly Forex.com - this solution wasnt able to work correctly in some cases.

My solution for this case was to find another adaptive criteria that could avoid the usage of the daily ATR indicator. I thought that if you could simply take a lower time frame and "extrapolate" you could maybe obtain the same results as you would with the regular daily-ATR solution. So my implementation was therefore really simple. Take a given hourly-ATR period indicator and then multiply it by X so that you reach a magnitude similar to that of the daily ATR indicator. You would still get evolving adaptability as market conditions change but of course, the speed and character of the adaptation would change.

In the end I found the results showed above for the EUR/USD and GBP/USD currency pairs using Teyacanani (Jan-2000, Jan-2010). The trading results - after following the same optimization procedure as with the original Teyacanani version - were very similar to those obtained with the daily-ATR solution, showing that a given hourly-ATR could in fact extrapolate to a daily-ATR without great changes in the effectiveness of the adaptation against volatility. However it is clearly notable here that this approach does not tend to work for all currency pairs. Some instruments like the NZD/USD and AUD/USD tend to have larger and more changing hourly volatilities that do not provide an adequate reflection when extrapolated towards daily volatility. The results obtained for these currency pairs are therefore poorer than when using the regular Teyacanani EA.

In the end, what this exercise has taught me - and I hope I have transmitted to you within this article - is that volatility adaptation can be carried out successfuly through many levels and that alternatives to daily-ATR based adaptation are clearly possible but may prove to be different for instruments with different characteristics. Right now this new version of Teyancanani - now available within Asirikuy - provides users of brokers that could not implement the WithoutSunday solution with a version of Teyacanani that can run on the EUR/USD and GBP/USD with similar profit and draw down targets. Volatility adaptation has always been one of my great areas of interest in automated trading and hopefully within the next few months and years I will be able to develop some robust and creative adaptive criteria :o).
